Gov. Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania's politically divided legislature missed Pennsylvania's legal deadline to pass a budget for the new fiscal year, amid closed-door talks to try to produce a compromise on a spending plan.

Pennsylvania wants to continue categorizing a class of powerful synthetic opioids as Schedule I controlled substances to allow state prosecutors to charge suppliers as use rises.

3. CHARTER CHECKS

Pennsylvania’s largest cyber charter school says it is “unreasonable” to expect its staff to see and hear from all students weekly, despite the Shapiro administration’s contention that it must do so to comply with state law.

4. AMAZON PLANS

Amazon plans to spend $20 billion to build two data centers in Pennsylvania, a move that state officials say will generate thousands of jobs over the next decade and stoke considerable economic activity.

5. LOTTERY LEGISLATION

The state Senate and House passed a bill allowing the Lottery to use more of its earnings on player payouts — boosting the number of games it sells with big-ticket prizes across Pennsylvania.

THE SCRAPPLE

LARGE LENS: Professors at Penn State were among the thousands of researchers who helped create the world’s most powerful survey telescope, which is now housed at an observatory in Chile, per the Centre Daily Times.


CHEESE INCIDENT: A deluge of mozzarella cheese shut down a portion of Interstate 80 in Centre County early this week. PennLive reports a truck sideswiped a tractor-trailer carrying the cheese, which spilled the entire load. No one was hurt.


BEER BUST? Is Pennsylvania's craft beer boom going bust? Maybe not, but Axios reports seven of Pennsylvania's largest craft breweries saw sales dip in 2024 amid a much broader downturn. 


SEVENTY-SISTERS: A WNBA team, expected to start playing in 2030, is on its way to Philadelphia, pending approval from league governors. The Sixers owners will co-own the team, and Comcast will hold a minority stake.


KEYSTONE SKATE: Several Pennsylvania skaters are in Austria this week to compete in the 48-team Roller Derby World Cup. We talked to five of them.
